The show features Maya Erskine as the voice of Mizu, a masterless samurai who hides her gender and mixed-race background.
She’s trying to find the European man who might be her father. Her journey is the main story, but the show also delves into the complex world of the Edo period in Japan.
This gripping tale is expansive and engaging, offering a fresh perspective on this historical era. If you’re interested in visionary animation, “Love Death & Robots” is another series.
Peaky Blinders
You probably saw this coming. This show is criminally underrated and is finally starting to get the education it deserves.
It is a crime drama set in 1920s Birmingham and revolves around the Shelby family as they go from rags to riches and establish themselves as a force to reckon with all over England.
This show blurs the lines between fiction and reality, as several actual historical figures are mentioned and very much present.
Ex-prime minister Winston Churchill is a recurring figure in the series. Real-life mob boss Billy Kimber, leader of the Birmingham Boys, is the main antagonist of season one. It features phenomenal performances from several renowned actors.
Cillian Murphy is arguably at his best here. Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody, and Paul Anderson are also impressive. If you’re a fan of The Godfather and Martin Scorsese’s films, chances are you’ve already seen this series. If you haven’t, check it out.
Six Feet Under
“Six Feet Under,” an HBO drama from 2001-05, remains impactful years after its final episode. Created by Alan Ball of “American Beauty” fame, it’s set in a Los Angeles funeral home.
The story revolves around brothers Nate and David, who struggle with challenging market conditions and their different personalities to keep their family business running.
They also care for their mother and younger sister, whose lives around death have shaped them in unique ways. Praised for its deep exploration of themes like sex and death, the show is renowned as a top-tier nighttime soap.
If you’re interested in a similar theme, the Norwegian series “Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes” is also set in a funeral home and blends horror with comedy.
Altered Carbon
An incredible science-fiction, neo-noir, cyberpunk series that takes place roughly 300 years in the future. The story revolves around Takeshi Kovacs (played by Joel Kinnaman in season one and Anthony Mackie in season two. I know that’s confusing; I’ll come to it later.)
Takeshi Kovacs was part of a group of warriors who often went rogue several years before the series’ events. His consciousness was imprisoned for hundreds of years before he was bought out by Laurens Bancroft, an extremely wealthy businessman who hires Kovacs to solve his murder.
Yes, that’s probably confusing as hell to you. Still, in the series, the wealthy, like Bancroft, can upload their consciousness to a cloud server and keep updating it so that if any casualty were to happen, they could revive the dead body and load back one’s memories to bring them back to life.
In Bancroft’s case, his data was uploaded every five minutes, but the murder occurred on the fourth minute. He has lost his memory for the last 4 minutes of his life, and therefore no idea who killed him. Murder? Maybe. Suicide? Unlikely.
That’s why Kovacs, a veteran, is hired to investigate. A must-watch for avid fans of science-fiction
Painkiller
“Painkiller” is a 2023 mini-series starring Matthew Broderick as Richard Sackler, the president of Purdue Pharma. Based on reporting by Barry Meier and Patrick Radden Keefe, the six-episode series focuses on the opioid crisis.
Uzo Aduba plays an investigator who digs into the overprescribing of opioids, linking it to drug companies deceiving doctors and patients about the addictiveness of pain pills.
The series features a strong cast, including Taylor Kitsch, Tyler Ritter, and West Duchovny, and tells intense, sometimes harsh stories about people’s lives ruined by OxyContin.
The Danish series “Borgen” is also recommended if you’re into socially relevant dramas.
Lucifer
This show has become a cult classic over the years. It boasts an incredibly loyal fanbase, and rightly so. It revolves around Lucifer Morningstar, the literal devil. Satan. He has been treading earth ever since the inception of time as we know it.
But, he has gotten bored of living like a devil in hell, as I imagine anyone would be. He decides to take a holiday on earth, Los Angeles, specifically.
He takes the form of an eccentric nightclub owner, a posh British male, played by Tom Ellis. Tom shines in this role and brings about the inability of Lucifer to comprehend the world, having been absent from it for so long.
He finds himself in a murder investigation by Detective Chloe Decker, played by Lauren German. However, he insists on teaming up with her, much to her resentment.
They eventually make a striking pair and hit it off. Lucifer becomes a staple at the LAPD as he solves murders with Chloe.
A perfect show, it has its moments of light-heartedness and, at the same time, explores the vast and rich mythology.
The Crown
“The Crown” is a grand historical drama on Netflix that spans six seasons and 60 episodes. It details the United Kingdom’s transformations during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, from her coronation to the early 2000s.
The series features Claire Foy as the queen in the first two seasons, depicting the late 1940s to mid-60s. Olivia Colman continues the role from 1964, highlighting England’s psychedelic and punk periods. Finally, Imelda Staunton portrays the queen during a crisis involving Prince Charles and Diana.
Known for its top-tier cast and lavish production, “The Crown” is celebrated for its extravagant scenes and stellar performances. If you’re interested in more tales of British high society, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is another engaging series.
One Piece
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” has been a success, much to the relief of fans. This version captures the original manga’s charm, hopefulness, and unique style.
It’s set in a fantasy world of pirates where people have special powers and search for a legendary treasure. Iñaki Godoy plays Monkey D.
Luffy, the aspiring Pirate King, with a natural ability matching the character’s rubber-like stretching powers. The cast perfectly portrays their characters, including Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.
Despite challenges, this “One Piece” adaptation is a journey worth experiencing.
Sex Education
It is one of the most popular shows on the streaming platform today. This show has connected its place in the hearts of its viewers.
However, it’s not your average teen drama like The O.C., Riverdale, etc. It’s a hilarious, well-made British series. It takes place in England in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
Otis Milburn is an awkward 16-year-old, best friends with Eric and living with his mother, Jean, a sex therapist. As such, Otis develops knowledge about his mother’s profession, considering she’s a bit too in his face about sex, almost too open.
However, Otis takes this golden opportunity and befriends Maeve, an enigmatic girl who’s intelligent and independent and lives in a trailer park. She sustains life by herself and relies on nobody to care for her.
She’s incredibly sharp and has a knack for business. Otis decides to start a business with her. He takes care of the sexual therapy, and she handles the money.
Moreover, they make good money but at the cost of hearing some embarrassing and downright stupid confessions of their fellow schoolmates. The plot is very well done, with several relationships and good, well-timed humor.
The LGBTQ+ community is also very well represented on the show. The show has a timeless feel, using 70’s vehicles and suburban houses and virtually no dependence or depiction of technology, barring mobile phones.
It makes you feel like it could have happened in any era, and quite frankly, that’s the best part about the series.
Gamera Rebirth
Gamera, a giant fire-breathing turtle from Japanese kaiju movies, hasn’t been as famous as Godzilla. But, Gamera is cool with a tough shell and the ability to fly and turn into a spinning, fiery weapon. Known as a “friend to all children,” Gamera stars in a new project called “Gamera Rebirth,” the first in 17 years.
This C.G. anime series is set in 1989 Tokyo and focuses on kids Boco, Joe, Junichi, and their bully, Brody. They witness Gamera battling monsters to save the world. Each 45-minute episode deeply explores Gamera’s classic enemies, offering thrilling action and making you rethink Godzilla’s fame.
