The 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) begins in earnest in March, featuring 74 games across the revised group stage and knockout phase. After just over two months of thrilling T20 competition, the 2024 IPL final is scheduled for Sunday, May 26. Which two teams will be battling it out for the 16th IPL title?

Looking at the latest futures markets with FanDuel Sportsbook, the Mumbai Indians are out in front as the most fancied IPL franchise before a single ball has been bowled.

Mumbai Indians are priced as +390 favorites to win their sixth IPL title. In terms of IPL odds to trust, FanDuel is one of the best-known brands in US sports betting, initially establishing itself in the world of daily fantasy sports. Having operated its online sportsbook since 2018, we’ll use their current 2024 IPL futures market as a steer for the five leading contenders for this year’s trophy.

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians have been one of the teams to beat throughout the last 16 years of the IPL. Winning almost a third (5) of the tournaments, it’s no surprise that this franchise is heavily fancied to make it six titles this year.

Assessing the Five Main Contenders for the 2024 Indian Premier League

With consistent all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the Indians’ skipper, Mumbai has a rock to fall back on. Coupled with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, it’s easy to see this Mumbai team has an impressive spine that can stay the course from March to May.

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings come into the 2024 IPL as the defending champions. Their dramatic last-ball win in the 2023 IPL final still lives long in memory, with Ravindra Jadeja’s 15 runs off the final six balls proving enough for the Super Kings.

MS Dhoni has led this franchise throughout the IPL and the veteran has confirmed his presence at this year’s tournament, despite more conjecture that he would be retiring. The Super Kings have also retained the services of Jadeja, while the likes of Moeen Ali, Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane also can be match-winners on their day.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are skippered by iconic South African Faf du Plessis and overseen by head coach Andy Flower. RCB are still considered one of the bridesmaids in the history of the IPL, having finished as losing finalists on three separate occasions. It’s been eight years since RCB last reached an IPL final, but there is every chance for Bangalore to go deep this season.

RCB have some hugely explosive talent in their ranks. If it comes together, more often than not, they’ll be a very tough nut to crack. Aside from du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik, and Tom Curran are all key players who can take the game away from the opposition.

Rajasthan Royals

The Royals have just one IPL title to their name. Interestingly, this win dates back to the inaugural IPL season, so it’s been a long wait for Rajasthan fans. Coached by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals are expected to be there or thereabouts this year.

Looking at their full roster for the 2024 IPL season, Rajasthan have some serious talent in their ranks, although they will be heavily reliant on big-hitting batter Jos Buttler. The English ace can score half-centuries and even centuries in the shortest form of the sport, but his form is increasingly streaky.

Gujarat Titans

The Gujarat Titans came within a whisker of landing the 2023 IPL final. They had the game in the palm of their hands going into the final over, but an explosive last six balls from Jadeja tipped the scales in the Super Kings’ favor.

Having won the 2022 IPL in their debut year, it’s not been dull for Titans fans so far. Shubman Gill will be the captain of Gujarat this season. He’ll be ably supported by the likes of David Miller and Kane Williamson, while bowlers Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad have some ‘X Factor’.
