Glau was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up with her sisters Christie and Kaitlin. Her background is German and Scots-Irish. Her dad’s a general contractor, and her mom’s a teacher.

In addition to classical ballet, she studied tango and flamenco. After breaking her toe in 2002, Glau moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Glau starred as a ballerina on an Angel episode in 2002. It was her first time on TV.
