She spent her early days in New Jersey and was born on 4th October 1946. She is the eldest of nine children. Her father Phillip Leslie Tomalin was an advertising executive, television producer, and one-time nightclub singer of English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry, and her mother Lenora Marie was of Italian descent. She attended Saint Francis Grammar School and Edison High School, where she was involved in various school plays.
She graduated in 1964 and attended Catholic University in Washington D.C. from 1964 to 1968, earning a Bachelor of Arts in drama under the drama coach Gilbert V. Hartke. To support herself during and after college, she worked various jobs.

She made her acting debut in Joe (1970) and gained fame for her role in the film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in 1975 as Janet Weiss.
