When people are in need of a laugh, comedy is generally the go-to entertainment option for most. A classic comedy not only provides a great deal of comical value, but it enables actors to really challenge themselves. That’s exactly why we’ve seen a number of stars being born off the back of a successful comedy release, with actors in this particular genre often referred to as being versatile and more than capable of jumping over to other genres within the movie sphere.

Over the years, we have witnessed the rise of some truly memorable comedy actors, some of whom have gone on to become Hollywood royalty. Even the most mundane of scenes can be elevated with the presence of a comedic genius, with so many hilarious actors shining in a variety of roles throughout the history of comedy-themed movies. After all, the power of humour is impossible to ignore and generally unites viewers more than any other genre of film. With a whole host of highly talented funny people appearing on our screens in recent times, below is a celebration of five of the best comic actors ever.

Bill Murray

Such is his appeal, most people have found themselves laughing along to Bill Murray at some stage in their lives. His laid-back style of comedy has made him a big hit in movies and on stage. Murray has also shone in more serious productions, namely in classics like Lost in Translation and Groundhog Day. Other more funny films featuring Murray include Ghostbusters, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Will Ferrell

From Elf to Step Brothers, Will Ferrell has starred in a number of masterpieces during his glittering acting career. After rising to fame in the Frat Pack comic group of the 90s, Ferrell’s rather crazy style of humour was winning people over instantly. From there, he starred in numerous movies thanks to his moments of hilarity and bizarre comedic style. Admittedly, Ferrell isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but there’s no doubting that he’s featured in some of the most memorable comedies of the last decade or so.

Jim Carrey

Known for appearing in dramatic roles, as proven in the likes of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, Jim Carrey is best known for his participation in a number of comedy classics. In fact, when it comes to comedy acting, there aren’t many in the same league as Carrey. The likes of Dumb and Dumber were particularly popular, but so too are past creations like The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, with there even being a slot game based on Ace Ventura at casino.com. Carrey has a natural comic flair and perfect comic timing, which lends itself perfectly to most comedy roles. Overall, Carrey has an exceptional range as an actor.

Robin Williams

The late great Robin Williams is a comic master who has starred in some of the greatest movies of all time. Possessing an instantly recognisable face and voice, Williams has delivered a wide variety of performances in a range of classic hits. Some of his most memorable appearances include the likes of Good Will Hunting, Good Morning, Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, and Aladdin.

Charlie Chaplin

We couldn’t really leave out Charlie Chaplin, could we? Perhaps the most famous actor of the five, Charles Spencer Chaplin is responsible for making most of the world’s population laugh at some point. His impact on the overall genre cannot be disputed, especially as it came during a time when people needed laughter more than ever. From Modern Times to City Lights, Charlie Chaplin was a genius.
